PRESENTED BY CITIZENS BANK

NU GRID FEATURING JEAN-PAUL BOURELLY,
GRAHAM HAYNES, VERNON REID AND DJ LOGIC

A FUNKY, FRESH, SONIC JAZZ PROJECT BEYOND THE ORDINARY

Pittsburgh, PA—As part of the the 6th annual Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival presented by Citizens Bank (PJLIF), the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will present a special performance of Nu Grid on Saturday, June 25 at 2:45 PM on the Penn Avenue Stage II.   The performance is free and open to the public.

The Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival attracts more than 20,000 attendees from around the country each year.  Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival Performances will take place in a variety of settings: outdoor stages, ticketed special engagements and indoor “gigs” at over 20 small venues throughout the Cultural District.  The festival is a free event that includes two ticketed performances and is open to the public. The ticketed special engagement performances will take place indoors. All three outdoor stages, the Artist Market and opening night Jazz Crawl are free and open to the public.

“Nu Grid exemplifies the very nature of jazz,” shared Janis Burley Wilson, Director of Jazz Programs for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.  “Jazz is transcendent.  What Bourelly, Haynes and Reid have created along with DJ Logic, defies boundaries, stretches the definitions of genres and promises to entertain.  We are pleased to present this special performance on our outdoor stage—free and open to the public.”

Founded by guitarist, vocalist, composer and producer Jean-Paul Bourelly, and cornetist and composer Graham Haynes, Nu Grid explores the boundaries of beat and improvised music. Bourelly describes Nu Grid as, “The convergence point of four accomplished musicians who have always moved on the progressive side of music. We use the jazz impulse, free form funk, beat music, Afro-phonics and any technologies that might lead us into new meaningful musical spaces, to inform us of the next exciting discovery.”

In addition to Bourelly, the experimental quartet is comprised of Haynes, who conducts the Bitches Brew Revisited project, guitarist Vernon Reid, founder of Grammy Award winning rock group, Living Colour, and globe trotting, beat master DJ Logic on the turntables.

This unique performance is in keeping with the PJLIF tradition of bringing emerging and unique artists to the city of Pittsburgh. Additional groups that will be making their Pittsburgh premiere include: Vocalist Buika, Hip-Hop/Jazz ensemble Revive Big Band and Gabriel Alegria’s Afro-Peruvian Sextet. “Each year I try to find a distinctive sound or examples of rare talent,” said PJLIF Festival Director Janis Burley Wilson. “With Nu Grid, I believe the collaboration of free jazz, funk metal and hip-hop is a new type of fusion concert that one would have to see to believe,” she concluded.

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has overseen one of Pittsburgh’s most historic transformations: turning a seedy red-light district into a magnet destination for arts lovers, residents, visitors, and business owners. Founded in 1984, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a non-profit arts organization whose mission is the cultural and economic revitalization of a 14-block arts and entertainment/residential neighborhood called the Cultural District. The District is one of the country’s largest land masses “curated” by a single nonprofit arts organization. A major catalytic force in the city, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a unique model of how public-private partnerships can reinvent a city with authenticity, innovation and creativity. Using the arts as an economic catalyst, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has holistically created a world-renowned Cultural District that is revitalizing the city, improving the regional economy and enhancing Pittsburgh’s quality of life. Thanks to the support of foundations, corporations, government agencies and thousands of private citizens, the Trust stands as a national model of urban redevelopment through the arts.  www.TrustArts.org
