PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST ANNOUNCES

60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE

DOLLAR BANK THREE RIVERS ARTS FESTIVAL

Point State Park | Gateway Center | Pittsburgh’s Cultural District

June 7–16, 2019

Pittsburgh, PA–This morning, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announced the full lineup for the 60th anniversary year of the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, a free festival celebrating music + art. The Festival runs June 7-16 in 2019 at Point State Park, Gateway Plaza, and the Cultural District in downtown Pittsburgh. An interactive timeline of Festival highlights over the last six decades can be found here. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is grateful to Dollar Bank for its long-time commitment of bringing this unique Festival to our city, and acknowledges 18 years of this generous support.

Through programming on the Dollar Bank Main Stage, Acoustic Stage at Gateway Center, and Stanwix Stage, the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival presents more than 85 musical acts. The featured music lineup, previously announced on March 27, is headlined by four-time Grammy Award winner, India.Arie. Her motivational lyrics and neo soul music have sold 3.3 million records in the US, and 10 million records worldwide. Music throughout the Festival runs the gamut, including New Orleans funk of NPR Tiny Desk Contest-winning Tank and the Bangas, Canadian folk singer-songwriter Kaia Kater, exhilarating brasshouse band Too Many Zooz, and intimate acoustic duo Mandolin Orange.

The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival’s rich history of visually enlivening the downtown area continues for the 60th anniversary. The Point State Park Main Lawn will be filled with Los Trompos or ‘spinning tops,’ a piece of public art by award-winning Mexican artists Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena. These brightly-colored, interactive sculptures function as both artwork and rotating seating spaces and are made possible by generous support from the Laurel Foundation. The Gateway Center area will also feature vibrant colors through Ocean Sole Africa’s art sculptures made entirely out of flip-flops reclaimed from the Indian Ocean. Ocean Sole Africa, of Kenya, collects, cleans, compresses, and carves these old flip-flops into masterpieces.

New in 2019, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is honored to announce the newly-established Barbara L. Widdoes Founders’ Endowment Fund in support of the operations of the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. Barbara Widdoes served as Director of the Festival and was among the event’s founders. She was especially fond of roving performers, and this fund in her honor will help underwrite Tutzanni street clowns ‘Beep’ and ‘Bop,’ who will travel the Festival footprint and interact with festivalgoers.

Fusing public art and contemporary dance, the exclusive city (Pittsburgh, PA) and U.S. premiere of Compagnie Furinkaï’s Origami will close out the 60th Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival the weekend on June 14-16, 2019. A special co-presentation with the Pittsburgh Dance Council, Origami introduces an unlikely pairing – a monumental, 40-foot shapeshifting shipping container and a gravity-defying dancer. There are only five opportunities to see this spectacle, inspired by Japanese paper folding. Origami performances will be held at the confluence of the three rivers at the Point on June 14 at 9:00 p.m., June 15 at 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., and June 16 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Art spaces throughout the Cultural District will be free and open to the public for the duration of the Festival, including 707 Penn, 937 Liberty, August Wilson African American Cultural Center Galleries, Harris Theater, Juried Visual Art Exhibition in the Trust Arts Education Center, SPACE, and Wood Street Galleries.

These highlights are only the beginning! The most current Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival listings, including annual favorites like the Artist Market, Giant Eagle Creativity Zone, Cultural District gallery exhibits, Acoustic Stage performers, public art, music headliners, and more can be found at TrustArts.org/TRAF.

The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival (60th year in 2019), a production of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, is a 10-day celebration of the arts in downtown Pittsburgh unlike any other in the nation. This world-class, multi-disciplinary festival is free to attend and open to the public. Attracting nearly 500,000 visitors annually, the Festival begins on the first Friday in June and takes place at the confluence of Pittsburgh’s famed three rivers in Point State Park, throughout picturesque Gateway Center, and in the city’s renowned Cultural District. Now in its 60th year, the Festival’s loyal visitors have enjoyed an extensive array of music, dance, theater, literary arts, public art, gallery exhibitions, and an Artist Market featuring 300+ artists from around the country. Through the Festival’s green initiatives of waste reduction, reuse, and recycling throughout the Festival grounds, it is the recipient of the Outstanding Green Event Award and GOLD level accreditation from the Pennsylvania Resources Council.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has overseen one of Pittsburgh’s most historic transformations: turning a seedy red-light district into a magnet destination for arts lovers, residents, visitors, and business owners.  Founded in 1984, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a non-profit arts organization whose mission is the cultural and economic revitalization of a 14-block arts and entertainment/residential neighborhood called the Cultural District.  The District is one of the country’s largest land masses “curated” by a single nonprofit arts organization.  A major catalytic force in the city, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a unique model of how public-private partnerships can reinvent a city with authenticity, innovation and creativity.  Using the arts as an economic catalyst, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has holistically created a world-renowned Cultural District that is revitalizing the city, improving the regional economy and enhancing Pittsburgh’s quality of life.  Thanks to the support of foundations, corporations, government agencies and thousands of private citizens, the Trust stands as a national model of urban redevelopment through the arts.
