“RISE UP”: HAMILTON GENERATES $25M IN ECONOMIC IMPACT
The smash-hit musical opened the 2024-2025 PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh Series
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 1, 2024: Since its debut in 2015, the Broadway phenomenon HAMILTON has captivated audiences and created an enduring cultural legacy. Its economic impact on host cities is just as powerful, with financial benefits that are immediate and substantial.
During its recent three-week run at the Benedum Center from September 11-29, as part of the PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh series, HAMILTON attracted over 64,000 visitors to Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. This highly anticipated return to the city marked its third tour stop in Pittsburgh, generating an estimated $25 million in economic activity for the region.
“The arts have a profound impact on our community, both within and beyond our venues,” said Kendra Whitlock Ingram, President & CEO of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. “We are proud to present Broadway sensations like Hamilton, which not only provide unforgettable experiences for audiences but also contribute significantly to local businesses and the broader regional economy.”
The $25 million economic impact encompasses both direct and indirect spending. Direct spending includes costs associated with the production, venue operations, and audience expenditures on dining, lodging, transportation, and other local services. Additionally, an economic ripple effect is captured through subsequent spending within the market. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s estimate is based on audience surveys and research conducted by The Broadway League, further underscoring the arts' vital role in Pittsburgh’s economic ecosystem.
Upcoming PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh productions include Stomp, October 18–19; & Juliet, October 29 – November 3; and MJ – The Musical, November 19 – December 1. Learn more at TrustArts.org/Broadway.
